How many days in Ottawa is enough?

Two days covers the core of Ottawa: Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the ByWard Market and two national museums. One day is enough for Parliament Hill, the canal locks, the market and one museum. A third day adds Gatineau Park. Every rated stop and meal below comes from our ranked lists, built from public Google Maps ratings pulled on 2026-10-29.

Ottawa Tourism says Ottawa is home to seven national museums, so museum fans can fill more days. Ratings move, so we refresh the lists every 90 days. The next refresh is due 2027-01-27.

One-day Ottawa itinerary

Morning: eat breakfast at Wilf & Ada's, 510 Bank St (4.6 from 2,288 reviews), then go to Parliament Hill, #7 on our attractions list with 40,402 reviews. Centre Block, home of the Peace Tower, is closed to visitors during construction, and main work ends between 2030 and 2031. Free guided tours still cover the Senate, the House of Commons, East Block and Parliament: The Immersive Experience at 211 Sparks Street. Reserve tickets in advance. In summer the Changing of the Guard starts at 10 a.m. daily; 2027 dates are not announced yet.

Midday: walk down to the Ottawa Locks, eight locks in a flight at the base of Parliament Hill, then on to the ByWard Market, founded in 1827 and home to over 500 businesses. Lunch at Tayanti Peruvian, 118 Clarence St (4.9, 1,041), or Shawarma Time & Place (4.9, 397).

Afternoon: pick one museum. The Canadian War Museum at 1 Vimy Place is #1 on our museums list (4.8, 10,896). Until December 9, 2026 it opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Adult entry is $23 plus tax and everyone needs a timed ticket. Have dinner at Pho By Night, 309 Dalhousie (4.7, 3,930), and dessert at PurpleX, 304 Wilbrod (5.0, 618).

Two-day and weekend itinerary

Day two crosses the river. The Canadian Museum of History at 100 Laurier St, Gatineau, is #3 on our museums list (4.7, 14,938). Adult entry is $25 plus tax. Eat lunch at Clandestin Cuisine Créative, 45 Rue Laval, Gatineau (4.8, 594). Back in Ottawa, spend the afternoon at the National Gallery of Canada (4.7, 10,964) or in Major's Hill Park, #1 of 537 parks on our list.

On a weekend, timing matters. The War Museum and the Museum of History are both free on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., so a long weekend that starts Thursday saves on tickets. The outdoor market runs Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., May to October, and a winter market runs November to early January.

Three-day itinerary: add Gatineau Park

Spend day three in Gatineau Park, which covers more than 361 square kilometres and is #11 on our parks list. Champlain Lookout, at the top of the Eardley Escarpment, is the park's best-known view. Pink Lake Trail is a 2.3 km loop with stairs, and swimming is not permitted. The Mackenzie King Estate grounds are free and open year-round, but its museums close in winter.

Getting there is seasonal. In 2026 the free NCC shuttle ran May 2 to October 25, every day except Wednesday, from downtown Ottawa-Gatineau on weekends and holidays and from Montcalm Rapibus station on weekdays. From October 26 the parkways close to cars and become ski trails, with no shuttle until spring 2027. Off season you need a car, or you can stay closer: Rideau Hall's 79-acre grounds are open year-round a few minutes from downtown, and Hog's Back Park (#2, 4.7, 3,405) is inside the city.

Families and winter

With children, start at the Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod St (#2 museum, 4.7, 15,227). This week it opens 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and is closed Tuesdays; check its hours page before you go. Adult entry is $26. The Canadian Children's Museum (4.7, 2,515) shares an address with the Museum of History in Gatineau and keeps the same hours. For treats, Malak and Sons in the market is #6 for ice cream (4.8, 224) and Orange Turtle Bakery, 285 St. Patrick St, is #1 for bakeries (5.0, 284).

In winter, plan for cold. At Ottawa's airport the average daily temperature in January is -10.3°C, and snowfall averages about 223 cm a year (Environment Canada 1981-2010 normals). The Rideau Canal Skateway is 7.8 km long and free, and its season typically runs January to early March, weather permitting. Winterlude 2027 runs January 29 to February 15. Put museums in the coldest hours.

Without a car, and day trips from Toronto or Montreal

The one-day plan works on foot: Parliament Hill, the Ottawa Locks and the ByWard Market are all downtown. For longer hops, O-Train Line 1 runs 12.5 km from Tunney's Pasture to Blair in under 30 minutes. Trains start at 5 a.m. on weekdays, 6 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Gatineau Park is the one stop that needs the shuttle or a car.

VIA Rail takes about 2 hours from Montreal (34 departures a week) and an average of 4 hours 36 minutes from Toronto (50 a week). From Montreal, the one-day plan fits a day trip. From Toronto, stay at least one night. On a Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City trip, check VIA directly for the Quebec City leg; we have not verified those times.

Where to eat and stay

Breakfast: Vylora Café is #1 on our breakfast list (5.0, 268), and Opulence Coffee, 261 Dalhousie, is #3 for coffee (4.9, 841). Downtown dinners: Kalinga Indian, 251 Laurier Ave W (4.8, 1,852), Greek Souvlaki Shack, 258 Bank St (4.8, 1,168), and Bistro Ristoro, 17 Clarence St (4.8, 662). Sharpfle Waffle, 111 York St (4.8, 974), suits a sweet lunch.

Hotels: Adam's Airport Inn, 2721 Bank St, tops our list (4.7, 992). ByWard Blue Inn is #2 (4.5, 1,324), The Business Inn & Suites #3 (4.4, 3,005) and the Lord Elgin Hotel #6 (4.3, 3,612). Our methodology page explains how each rank is calculated.
